Lawrence Park Community Church is a dynamic, progressive, unique community of faith Founded in the years following the Second World War, LPCC has, since its inception, tried to be a place of welcome for people of a wide variety of Christian faith experiences. We are a member congregation of the United Church of Canada, but hope to be a church family where denominational affiliation, creed and doctrine take “second place” to thoughtful, lively and progressive expressions of the Christian faith. Recently, in connection with our Building Revitalization Program, the congregation adopted a set of “Core Value Statements” to try to clarify our sense of who we are. They include: - We are an inclusive congregation; therefore we want our building to be accessible to all. Among other things, this means suitable access for those with physical limitations, good acoustics for those who find hearing difficult, and appropriate lighting for those with limited vision.
- We value the participation of the young in our midst; therefore we want adequate, accessible, attractive and suitable space for our programming with youth, children and infants.
- Worship is the most important single thing we do together, and we value liturgical styles which range from the traditional to the most contemporary; therefore we want our worship space to be attractive, welcoming, and adaptable to a variety of styles and expressions.
- We want visitors and new members to feel welcome; therefore, we want entranceways to be open, warm and welcoming; we want traffic flow to be intuitive and clear; we want signage that is attractive and inviting.
- As a part of our Christian stewardship, we want to maximize the use of our facility; therefore we want our space to be as flexible as possible with respect to its design and configuration, with a view to serving both current and evolving needs.
- We want a music program that balances the goals of inclusivity and excellence, offering a range of music from traditional to contemporary; therefore we want our sanctuary to complement a range of musical and artistic expression.
- We are committed to Social Justice; we therefore want our building to be the kind of place where people of all socio-economic strata will feel welcome; we want to create the kind of place where justice-based programming will feel “at home”.
- We are a neighbourhood-based church, but we want to serve people from throughout the greater constituency of North Toronto; therefore, we want our building to make an “attractive” statement; we want to retain adequate parking for a “commuter” congregation.
- While our building is first and foremost our church “home”, we also have a desire and commitment to hosting neighbourhood and community groups; therefore we want our building to be a suitable site for hosting artistic, athletic, health-based, and other groups from our area; we want kitchen facilities that are clean, modern and efficient
- We are responsible for the care and stewardship of God’s creation; therefore we want our building to be energy efficient, and constructed with an eye towards ecological and environmental responsibility, while remaining economical to operate.
