Hymn sing will be on our summer schedule starting this week. Our next online session will be Thursday, July 14th. In the meantime, my first suggested summer listening is the third symphony "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" by Polish Composer Henryk Górecki. A Youtube link with subtitles available can be found here: Gorecki – Symphonia No 3, Beth Gibbons & Polish National Radio Symphony con subt - YouTube. The dominant themes of the symphony are of motherhood, despair, and suffering, using texts from a Polish prayer for the mother Mary, from a note on a Gestapo cell wall in WWII Germany, and a Silesian folk song. The music is tense, dissonant, and full of heartbreak, but absolutely stunning to listen to!
I will be setting up a time for discussion and comment on the piece on June 30th at our regular Hymn Sing time if folks would like to join me online for that!
