On Thursday, July 2nd at 7:30 p.m. Stephen will be hosting his second evening of "Media with Meaning". This isn't a lecture series, but a chance to talk about life, social justice and the future, using specific shows and films as a jumping off point.
Tonight we will be talking about the 2016 American documentary by Ave DuVernay called13th. In a summer when anti-Black racism has become a searing issue, this film carefully examines how a loophole in the U.S. constitution has been used to justify anti-Black racism since the end of the civil war. If you have wondered what people mean by systemic racism, this film explains it well, and with stellar interviews and solid evidence. The 13th was nominated for an Oscar, and won an Emmy as best Documentary. Should make for a fascinating discussion.
The film can be found on Netflix and the full feature is also located below from YouTube for those of you who do not have access to Netflix. All are welcome, all you need to do is to have already seen the film. See you there.
